Conditional Variables in regards to Templates

Not sure how to describe my question, but here goes.

I reviewed a webinar on Trivantis' site about variables (http://www.lectora.com/elearning-webinars/inspiration-wednesdays-archive -> 4. Using Variables in Lectora) Towards the end (roughly 43 min), there is a section about tracking a student's progress. I understand how this is done, but my situation is a little bit different.

I'm designing an elearning template for my department to use. The guys developing the courses are going to be entering information rather than actually designing a course from scratch. They are instructors who teach people how to operate machinery, not software gurus. That's where I come in. They are going to understand how to use the software such as entering text boxes and images but not necessarily in-depth like i am, such as setting up variables. The goal is to set up the template with variables set in place so all they have to do is minor stuff like add chapters, pages, images, etc.

I'm doing a menu page. If a chapter has been visited, there is a check mark. If not, there is a red x. In the webinar, she sets it up where if the variable contains the page name (i.e. if the variable contains the word Terminology, which is the actual, permanent name of her page), then show the check mark. However, in her example it is assumed you already have the page name ready to go. In a template setting, the page names will vary.

Question is: is there a way to set it where if the variable contains Chapter1Name (where as Chapter1Name is a changing variable, not the actual permanent name), then the check mark shows up? That way, no matter how many times Chapter1Name gets changed, it'll still work. I tried looking under reserved variables but couldn't figure out a solution.

If you don't understand my explanation, I can try explaining using screen shots.
