Best Dimensions for Lessons?
April 16, 2013 12:00 AM
Does anyone have dimensions that will enable lessons to be displayed on today's laptops without
cutting off any graphics when viewed in a browser such as IE 10? Trying to optimize my lesson and make
sure it is set so it works in the smallest screen areas.
thanks

We have a restriction from our LMS that we are not to produce anything larger than 1022 by 730, as the minimum sized screens of laptops permitted in the organisation is 1024 x 768 (minus space for the window chrome). If your people have restricted hardware like ours (ie no Bring Your Own Device - BYOD) you could get some idea off the area of your organisation that buys the equipment.
If you are in a BYOD environment then there is no “exact” answer to your question as your learners may be accessing your learning on anything; tablets, mobile phones etc.
One thing you could do is add some JavaScript on the first page to get the browser window dimensions. If these are smaller than your set dimensions then use a JavaScript alert to warn them that they will not be able to view all of the content. You could advise them to: (a) view the site from another device or (b) use their browser zoom function (I think most have that now) to shrink the display so that it does fit (though that may not be legible on a mobile phone).
