I kind of fell into the role in the corporate world, and have some limited success in my little pond.

The following is strictly my opinion, nothing more:

Clearly one needs a solid ID background and skillset, regardless of the delivery modality.

My success in eLearning as in part been due to the ability to take a minimal amount of information from a design document or requirements from the client, and quickly generate a prototype. Once the prototype is in place, the client or project lead can then provide either a thumbs up/down, or it'll spark more ideas for them. I recently had a design requirement that was one sentence: 'Provide an overview of the job functions of this group." No objectives, no nothing. So that one took quite a bit more question asking to get started, but once we had a prototype suddenly the flood gates opened on what they wanted. Whether this prototyping skill is innate or I just get lucky with them, I don't know.

Lastly, practice practice practice and have a thick skin. People will love what you generate, and they'll hate what you generate.
