Adding to reference lists

Fairly new at this. I'd like to use the Reference List feature, but can only find a reference tab in the "Image Properties" dialog box - not on a page or a text box. Don't know if it's my version (2007). If I have a number of references to add to the box, how do I get them there automatically as you can with the reference tab on the image properties dialog? Am I missing something?

The manual simply says "Almost every object prop. dialog box includes a tab for ref." Doesn't seem true where I'd need it - in the text. Does anyone use this feature? Any suggestions? TX
