Accessing Lectora variables from JavaScri

Oh, just a theory question mostly. From previous posts I thought I understood the getValue() and setValue() functions but I can't get them to work. I was also curious about accessing a variable declared on one page from another page. Sounds like it would not be accessible without using it in an action.
